In May of 2007, the informational and promotional blog, "Oklahoma Tellers" will cease. This blog began at a time when it was so very difficult to get serious promotion or information out concerning storytelling, storytelling events, or storytellers. There was then no regular and broad spectrum venue for storytelling news in the state of Oklahoma.

It also served to provide free promotion to working storytellers in the state from 2007-2010.

I recall one event in Norman being stashed in the "If You Have Nothing Else to Do" column of a weekly entertainment guide. Storytelling is one art form Oklahoma has yet to recognize or value.

A news source or bulletin board, however, can only be as good as the information provided to it. The input and collaboration from performers and venues is necessary Therefore, at the end of the month, December 2010, the blog will shut down after three years.

Thanks to the many thousands who stopped by to have a look, learn a little, and get connected to storytelling in Oklahoma.

Territory Tellers is hosting a story swap in Norman on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Jacobson House, 609 Chautauqua Avenue from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Jacobson House is a fine art museum on the OU campus that showcases Native American art. Museum goers will be the audience.

Practice a good story, come to Norman, and put your name in the hat! If you come early, you can attend the TT Board meeting from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the same location.

PIONEER LIBRARY MOORE OFFERS STORYTELLING WITH "CULTURE JAM"

Red Ribbon Day, Saturday October 30, an exciting tradition in Moore, Oklahoma officially begins with a city-wide parade. The first Red Ribbon Culture Jam directly follows, kicking off at 12:00 p.m. at the Moore Public Library 225 South Howard. The Culture Jam is broad in focus and offers a huge line-up of musical entertainment, story performances, cooking demonstrations, and boasts an international marketplace.

“The Cultural Jam is completely unique to Moore,” says Tera McAmis, Outreach Specialist for Moore Public Library. “You’ve heard the cliché, ‘Something for Everyone and the Red Ribbon Culture Jam truly lives up to that billing. Our focus is four cultural regions: Asian, Celtic, Hispanic, and African, with each area celebrated through a variety of arts.”

On the Sounds of the World stage, Damon Frazier and Rithm Company kicks off the event with West African drumming; followed by OU Arashi Taiko a vibrant Asian drum-band; and All About Irish Dance jigging to Celtic beats. Jesse Bills demonstrates his special talent on the bagpipe. The headlining act, Son del Barrio, closes the entire show with a knock-out performance of high energy and driving music, that invites dancing and just letting go. Various food vendors will also be available in the North Parking lot area.

The Cooking Pot sponsored by Platt College, features chefs creating cultural dishes. Participants can learn about distinctive cuisines, watch how dishes are prepared, and experience unique spices, ingredients, and traditions. Free samples and recipes are part of these exciting demonstrations.

Fables and Folk Lore is where story-telling takes on new dimensions. Anam Cronan performs Celtic legends accented with flute and harp performances. DWe Williams spins African stories and tales. Narrators from the OCU Korean Student Association weave magical tales from the mystic east and Diana Tono chronicles myths in the Hispanic tradition.

World Neighbors sponsor a cultural marketplace, The International Fair-Trade Market with a full spectrum of arts, crafts, and creations for sale. Travel the ‘globe’ in Moore for hand-crafted items such as Nepali handbags, Guatemalan textiles, multi-cultural jewelry, tribal masks, coffees and chocolates, and Peruvian pottery. All the products are ‘fair-trade certified’ guaranteeing that the artisans receive a fair wage for their work. Buy special gifts and give back at the same time.

Take World Neighbors’ Water Walk and experience firsthand what life is like for some women in the poorest areas of the world. In many developing countries, billions of people have inadequate access to water, which needs to be gathered daily for survival needs. “Walk” in their footsteps…carry large containers of water, walk barefoot over stones, sand, and rocks and you will never take water for granted again.

Four hours of simultaneous events are planned. Choose your favorite venues! Participants can come-and-go, enjoy the music, or stop by cooking demonstrations. Local Private University To Offer Storytelling Course Spring 2011

Learn to get your message out with new skill, learn to engage minds in innovative ways, foster imagination in youth, spice up a topic through tales that paint images, motivate and inspire, simply by learning to speak the common language of humanity - storytelling.

Southwestern Christian University, Bethany, Oklahoma will be offering a beginning storytelling course in a weekend module for Spring 2011.

The course is LIS/SPCH 2642 Storytelling: Techniques and Methods to be offered Friday March 4 and Saturday March 5 from 8:30 to 4:30.

The two hour credit course is "designed to introduce the history, values, methods, and applications of the art of oral storytelling with audiences of diverse ages, settings, and purpose. Storytelling is used in education, religion, business, communication, health care, and youth services." Prerequisite: Introduction to Speech Communication (or equivalent).

BARTLESVILLE GHOST WALK

Bartlesville OK is having their second Ghost Walk on Oct 20-21. Several tellers from Territory Tellers will be telling spooky tales in various historical buildings in town: Tony Hardman, Fran Stallings, Dianne Fallis and Nancy Matthews.

The historical Price Tower which is a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright will be a rest stop with music, free hor douvers (spell), and you can purchase drinks as well. Two resturants in town will have tellers and while you are there you might want to linger and have supper. Both have really good food. The tour will include buildings that have some verrrry interesting history with ghosts, murder and mayhem committed in or near them.

Tickets for the tour are $5.00 and for those of you who may have a walking problem, we have a trolloy for transportation to various locations.

Let me tell you about....storytellers who walk on the wild side! Often unrecognized, these are the storytellers who enchant, entertain, and educate during the haunting times of the year and on tours through various corners of any region.

They dress in costumes, provide stories as they tour aged corners of a community, historic sites with strange visitors, recount daring deeds and old mysteries. Others, go legend tripping, investigate spooky old places, and carry strange bits of electronic paraphernalia and then share their tales in a variety They, like all other storytellers, delve into the pool of human legends, myths, and the ongoing folklore of the urban legend.

The members of paranormal groups, historic site ‘ghost/cemetery tour guides’, and similar individuals sprinkled around any locale. Since many are often unconnected to any storytelling group they provide an excellent opportunity to encourage people with kindred interests to get connected to local guilds. Many are aligned with theatrical groups, tourism agencies, and volunteers for historic real estate and there is no reason why they should be story friends.

Others have no exposure to storytelling and provide a wonderful new pool of people to introduce to the diversity and fellowship in the storytelling world.

As the “Oklahoma Ghost Teller,” I have met many such people while doing stories at local paranormal conferences, fairs, events at local historic sites, local libraries, and similar events. I am mentoring two right now because they want to learn how to share their interests in more engaging and interesting manner. In the past, storytellers have often bemoaned people who have wanted to box storytellers into a ‘kids only’ container. They wanted recognition for other visions for the art form and the same applies with connecting to these new groups and audiences. All it requires is a willingness to expand the parameters of the story tent and tap into a popular body of mythic – if alternative – story sources.

OPINIONATED STORYTELLERS

Storytellers, like everyone else, live in their cultures, social strata's, and traditions. Additionally, they cross social, racial, economic, educational, cultural, and educational lines to interact with other components in society. In a period when society is increasingly more fragmented and divided along political, religious, lifestyle, or philosophical lines it is important that storytellers remember that diversity is a two way street and tolerance a path of mutual manners. Storytellers, by virtue of the strength and confidence required to share stories in public in the first place, can be pretty strong minded, ego driven, and opinionated.

Two examples serve to illustrate the issue. In one state storytelling group where a subset who were people of faith and they wished to add to the state event a program for the mutual sharing of stories of faith and the sacred. Another group, who did not share this interest laughed, in many ways demeaned the idea, and minimized the other storytellers. Since no one was planning to force anyone to participate, the reaction was intolerant, divisive, and insultive. In another situation, a storyteller who was on one side of a political-social issue evangelistically promoted their view through stories, materials, and even the t-shirt worn. Yet, when another storyteller with equally strong, yet opposite views attempted to do the same they were met with intolerance, limitations, and restrictions as to content of stories shared.

Storytelling in its earliest roots was surely the epitome of what we like to call ' Freedom of Speech'. In the ability to present stories of differing views, from differing cultures, and sharing diverse values, the listener has always been encouraged to consider and weigh options as they develop their own opinions. Storytelling has always been a source of moral, ethical, and educational direction for people. Stories are the voices of family and friends connecting each human being to another.

Families are often loud and talk over each, are opinionated and blunt, but they should also always be listeners. Storytellers should also be listeners. What is the old adage about understanding comes from walking in anothers shoes? Maybe it also comes from changing perspective, tolerating other views, and respecting not only our own opinions but allowing others their own as well.

The Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee will host a story conference Sept. 24th and 25th. It will be held at the historic Bacone College. Tim Tingle (Choctaw) will co-host plus there will be fifteen well-known storytellers. Among them are Choogie Kingfisher (Keetoowah Cherokee), Ryan Mackey (Cherokee), Stella Long (Choctaw), Lorie Robins (Chickasaw), Greg Rodger (Choctaw/Chickasaw), Phillip Harjo (Seminole), LeAnne Howe (Choctaw), Dr. Phillip Carrol Moargan (Chickasaw/Choctaw), Dr. Daniel Littlefield (Cherokee), Joyce Bear (Muscogee) to name a few.

Another Indian event is the 2010 Oklahoma Indian Summer Festival in Bartlesville on Sept. 17th-19th, at the Bartlesville Community Center located at Adams and Cherokee in Bartlesville OK. There will be more than 30 artists displayed in the Center and outside there will be food and craft venders and traders with a variety of wares with the native American theme. There will be intertribal powwow and contests. There will be interactive traditional craft making and cultural demonstrations all weekend. Sunday there will be church service and a gospel sing.

Dianne Fallis and Nancy Lenhart Matthews have been invited by the Cherokee Indian Women's Storytelling group to tell Indian stories on Saturday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm. Nancy will also be telling on Friday morning to the school children attending the festival.

'THE GHOST TELLER' READY FOR THIS FALL

Marilyn A. Hudson, 'The Oklahoma Ghost Teller', will be returning to the Overholser Mansion in October to support the lovely historic structure through a series of storytelling and tour events. She will be performing two story sessions per night from Oct. 27-30. Well received in 2009, Hudson looks forward to returning to the mansion to share her historically based tales with attentive and delighted audiences.

"It was the perfect venue, " she noted recently in an interview, "the grand dame of early Oklahoma looking lovely in the autumn twilight, the coach house alight with the faint glow of pumpkin toned lights, and audiences of teens and adults waiting to enjoy a shiver or two."

Hudson, who holds degrees in both history and library and information studies, began crafting shivery takes from legends and early news accounts several years ago. A professional storyteller for over a decade and a published author, she enjoys the experience as much as her audiences.

Hudson will also be at the Warr Acres Library on Saturday, October 23, 2010 sharing tales for upper elementary and adult. She still has some openings for Fall Break, by the way.

Look for her, in her long black cape, as she brings some delightful seasonal tales for what writer Ray Bradbury called the "October country."

TELLABRATION IS COMING: NEVER TOO EARLY TO PLAN

The month of November may seem far, far away but it is not and will be here sooner than we may think. "Tellabration" is that wonderful time when stories fill the air and dance in the imagination like falling leaves. Normally an evening of adult stories for adult listeners, some venues plan family events, and others plan mixed music and story events.

The day is Nov. 20, 2010, however events occurr, "in the spirit of" storytelling all week long.

Already plans are in place for events in Choctaw, Locust Grove, and many others still in the planning stages.

Locations range from libraries, to homes, to bookstores, to clubs, and museums. Anywhere people might be gathered to hear and delight in the ancient and ever new oral art of storytelling.

"Tell It Again!" family storytelling event, Saturday April 17, 2010 at Southwestern Christian University (Patrick Building), Bethany, Oklahoma will feature three well known author-storytellers. Molly Lemmons, Kathryn Thurman and Jim Etter.

Molly Lemmons, aka"Molly Lou Belle with Tales to Tell!", is well known and loved around the state of Oklahoma and beyond for her charming stories of the way things used to be. Humorous, touching, and totally enjoyable she will entertain any audience. She is also an award winning author of several books based on a popular newspaper column and on personal remembrances of life: "Kind of Heart", a novel "The Passing of Paradise", and a book for young girls, "Pure as the Driven Snow."

Kathryn Thurman, has been sharing tales, directing plays, and working with community groups for many years. She is the author of several books and led numerous workshops on the use sound equipment, character development, and stage presence for emerging storytellers. She often weaves an Indian flute into her stories and lends a moment of awe and magic to tales from across time. Funny and often fast paced she adds many unique stylings to keep every audience listening.

Jim Marion Etter is a retired, award-winning reporter for The Daily Oklahoman whose offbeat, folksy writing about his home state has earned him the reputation as "Oklahoma's master country storyteller." A writer of both fiction and nonfiction, he's the author of five books and a contributing author of four others, and has written for numerous magazines including Persimmon Hill and Western Horsemen. A native of the small Muskogee County town of Oktaha, he now lives in Oklahoma City. He's also been a newspaper and television reporter in Laredo, Texas - "El Charro Flaco" - and has served as a military journalist and translator in Latin America. His books have captured a nearly forgotten Oklahoma history and his stories provide a glimpse into the byways and people of some interesting places. His books include:Thunder in the Heartland: Parables from Oklahoma, It's A Dirty Shame:101 Unforgettable Places in Oklahoma,and others.

Serving as MC will be Marilyn A. Hudson, another Oklahoma storyteller , author of "Off the Page!", also writes the "Oklahoma Tellers" blog informing about tellers, events, and history of storytelling in Oklahoma.

Plutarch said, "never blame or praise yourself", but sometimes we also fail to praise others for the work they do, the enjoyment they convey or the dreams they share. We fail to appreciate their unique qualities in the face of terrible, and sometimes negative, forces of conformity and standardization.

As a Japanese quote says: “If one man praises you, a thousand will repeat the praise”, so add a comment about a storyteller YOU know. Just a line about their skills, an enjoyed tale, or a potential they possess. Young, old, and those still undecided will benefit and be encouraged to not keep those stories to themselves any longer.

'TELL IT AGAIN!" STORYTELLING FOR FAMILIES
Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 1 -3 p.m. will be a fun-packed storytelling program for families with children from 3 to 12. A collection of professional storytellers will share exciting, fun, and engaging stories the whole family will enjoy! A folkoric dance group is also scheduled.

Some of the storytellers scheduled include Barbara Wright Jones, Molly Lemmons, Kathryn Thurman, and Marilyn A. Hudson. These storytellers have traveled the state presenting programs in numerous venues, have all planned major storytelling events, and are all published authors as well as storytellers.

Knowing the great educational and entertainment value storytelliing has, these committed performers as they weave their exciting tales, model an always new and enjoyable art form that helps children develop the skills they neeed to learn as well.

This event is being sponsored by the Professional Educational Services program (ABLE) of Southwestern Christian University, the SCU Library, and the Oklahoma Association of Storytellers.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Anyone remember that movie from a while back? "Home for the Holidays"? All about the fun of going home to feuding and fussin' relatives. Too true sometimes. I was on a listserve once where we had a 'feast of the imagination' and every teller added their particular favorites... I am fond of a pecan, cranberry, apple, and link sausage dressing......drool......I think I like the variety and the diversity of that dish. I don't get it often. Sometimes money has been scarce. Sometimes death has come to call over the holiday robbing me of appitite. Sometmes life as a jest selected the holiday as one to bring misfortune, depression, and pain. I remember the dressing though. Every bite a delight and an adventure. Every bite a shield against life by providing a memory of something sweet and good. Looking around this home of the mind, I see the fire crackling, children are playing, and some are setting up extra chairs while the others put finishing touches on this dish or that. Aromas fill the air and outside all is gold and crisp. All are together in peace and harmony allowing the soul a chance to settle. Over in the corner the little ones are gathered around on the floor as a storyteller gets comfortable.... "Once, a long time ago there was this big family in a little, tiny house. In this house they had a can of peas, a bag of beans, and one single loaf of bread. It would be all they had to eat for many days to come. Outside arose a noise and all rushed to the window. A wagon filled with travelers had broken down on the road. Soon they were pounding on the doors. "Can you feed us?" "We are so hungry...?" How do you think the story goes? What dish are you bringing? Remember the good times, forget the bad, enjoy your family and friends and live richly, passionately, and divinely in each and every moment.

The theme is “Spooky Stories." It’s Fall and Halloween is on the way. Do you have noises in the attic? A hook hand caught in your car door? Left your cat at the Pet Cemetery and it came back? Come tell your Spooky Story at the next OKC StorySlam. Storytellers will get extra points for dressing up this month.

A StorySlam is an open mic, competitive storytelling event. There is a theme for each evening’s event, and stories told must somehow relate to the evening’s theme. Participating StorySlammers arrive early to sign up and names are selected at random. StorySlammers will spin tales of 7 minutes or less. The performance should be told rather than read. Creativity is encouraged, truth is optional. Winners are selected by crowd response so bring all of your loud friends!

This event is FREE and anyone is welcome to participate or listen to the stories. However, story content is often geared toward an adult audience. The evening will continue until everyone has had a chance to tell a story and the winners have been selected. 5 storytellers had their stories taped at Choctaw Public Library Saturday, September 26. This project developed by Rosemary Czarski and Chester Weems was designed to help storytellers improve their skills by making a video so each teller could see what the audience sees. Each participant will receive a DVD of approximately 15 minutes of herself telling 2-3 stories. Pictured is Oklahoma storyteller, Susie Beasley. CHESTER WEEMS WINS AWARDS

Long time storyteller, educator, photographer Chester Weems has been recognized for his photos by the Woodward Plains and Indians Museum. Chester has long been the 'unofficial' chronicler of the sights related to almost all the major storytelling figures in Oklahoma over the last decade. His collection of photos runs into the thousands. Congrats to Chester! Chester Weems is currently working 'collecting family stories and photographing storytellers.' Southwestern Christian University is planning a course on storytelling. There is possibility of it being offered online and/or as a special short term course on campus. Details are still being ironed out. SCU is located in Bethany (Rockwell and NW 39th Expressway) and is a North Central accredited institution offering degrees in Business, English, Fine Arts, Religion, and Behavioral Science. They also offer a one night a week degree completion program for working adults and graduate degrees in ministry with additional master's level degrees in Business and Behavioral Science being planned.

Storytellers are invited to come to a story swap with a twist. Come and share your funny stories, sad stories, healing stories, short stories, animal stories and people stories, and get your performance videotaped. Chester Weems, retired educator and amateur storyteller from Yukon who enjoys photography, will videotape performers as they share stories with the audience. This video will be transferred to a high quality DVD (Not HD) for each performer and will be mailed to the performer approximately one week after the program.

This tool will help the performer hone his/her skills or use the end product in marketing the performer.

Performers are encouraged to be part of the audience for other storytellers during this event. Copyright issues will be the sole responsibility of the performer.

Performers will be asked to limit their performance to 12-15 minutes to give fellow storytellers the opportunity to participate. Performers should prepare a brief (15-20 second) bio-introduction to lead into the taping. Priority will be given to storytellers who wish to be videotaped.

There will be a $5.00 mailing and materials resource fee.

Pre-Registration is REQUIRED. Call the Choctaw Library at 390-8418.

Beverages, fruit and pastries will be served. The WayWord Tellers are an Oklahoma City area storytelling group dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the art and tradition of storytelling.

"GhostTales2Go", aka Molly Lemmons, Barbara Jones and Marilyn A. Hudson, will be "scaring" up some good stories this October. In delightfully humorous, historically spooky, and tantalizing mysterious the trio will provide the "treat" this Halloween season.

Molly Lemmons, well-known for her delightful costumed storytelling is an author and workshop leader as well. Molly Lemmons has been listening to her family's stories all of her life, and has picked up the family tradition by continuing them. It is only recently that she began to tell them professionally.
Barbara Jones is an educator, author, missionary, and storyteller who has woven all together to introduce children and adults to various Spanish speaking cultures though delightful stories. A popular storyteller she travels the state sharing stories for young and old.
Marilyn A. Hudson, Norman, also known as the "Oklahoma Ghostteller", is well known for her stories combining Oklahoma history and the mysterious. She was a featured teller at the 2009 ParaCon Conference in El Reno, and has told around the state for various events, libraries, and schools.

Oklahoma City Storytelling Festival, September 11-12, 2009

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Storytelling Festival, formerly known as the WinterTales Storytelling Festival, has a new name and new season, but will continue the 28-year tradition of entertaining adult audiences with imaginative stories and performances.

Now held in the fall, the Oklahoma City Storytelling Festival will take place Sept.11 and 12 at Stage Center in downtown Oklahoma City.

After much planning, volunteer co-chairs Phil Carlton and Kym Koch Thompson promise a weekend full of entertaining stories from world-famous tellers Kevin Kling, Susan Klein, Motoko and Minton Sparks.

“Everyone should go for the simple fact that a single person on a bare stage can hold an audience spellbound for hours without any visual aids – just their voice painting a vivid, compelling picture in your imagination,” said Koch Thompson, who has been volunteering for the storytelling event for five years.

“Storytelling is an art form that easily creates connections and communities of people by offering life lessons or shared experiences. No matter whether the story covers common or uncommon ground, the listener can always relate to it because the art is in the telling,” she said.

With four renowned tellers of different backgrounds, adult audiences are sure to relate to their colorful, humorous and inspirational stories.

Featured storyteller, Kevin Kling, is a well-known playwright and storyteller from Minneapolis, Minn. His plays and adaptations have been performed around the world. He is best known for his popular commentaries on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” and his storytelling stage shows, like “Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log,” delivers hilarious, often tender stories. His artistry has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, The McKnight Foundation, The Minnesota State Arts Board, The Bush Foundation, The Jerome Foundation and others.

Born, raised, and still residing on Martha’s Vineyard Island, Mass., Susan Klein is an award-winning spoken-word artist. She is a much sought-after editor and story coach for the stage and page, and leads workshops in America and Europe through her business, Story Wisdom, and is the owner of Ruby Window Productions. During her touring career she has appeared in more than 120 storytelling festivals. Susan is a winner of numerous awards for her audio work as well as the coveted Circle of Excellence Award.

Motoko Dworkin, a native of Osaka, Japan, first came to the United States as an exchange student to University of Massachusetts. Her partner Eshu Bumpus introduced her to the world of American storytelling. Motoko has performed professionally since 1993, going to hundreds of schools, libraries and festivals. Motoko has appeared on “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” and an educational video by Harcourt. Her debut CD, “The Promise of Chrysanthemums,” won a 2002 Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award and a 2003 Storytelling World Award.

Spoken-word artist, Minton Sparks, is in a category all her own – fusing poetry and her gift for storytelling into a series of one woman performances punctuated with world class music. Minton Sparks travels extensively, performing at various universities, clubs, conferences, and music and poetry festivals nationwide. Grammy-nominated Sparks was featured nationally on the NPR’s “All Things Considered” and internationally on the BBC’s “Bob Harris Show,” along with the syndicated Woodsongs’ “Old Time Radio Hour.”

Festival Performance Schedule
There are two evening performances that feature all four tellers and cover humorous and inspirational themes. These performances are intended for adults. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.artscouncilokc.com, at the event or by calling 405-270-4848.

New Storytelling Group Forming in Central OK

As Oklahoma sets sail into a new millennium, a new group is forming to launch storytelling in the state into new and wider waters. OK TELLERS will be a loose association of artists who share tales through a variety of mediums and venues. Classic children's stories, urban tales, paranormal tales, historic tour guides, student storytellers, writer-tellers, puppeteers, and so much more!!

Plans are underway to establish a series of training events to launch people into storytelling! These will be available for scheduling in libraries, youth programs, and other venues for a reasonable program or per participant cost.

Have you ever set out to be the good Samaritan and ended up with a lawsuit? Have you found yourself attempting to solve a problem and actually end up making it bigger? If so, come share your story of Good Intentions at Oklahoma City's premiere storytelling event, the OKC StorySlam.

A StorySlam is an open mike, competitive storytelling event. There is a theme for each evening's event, and stories told must somehow relate to the evening's theme. Participating StorySlammers arrive early to sign up and names are selected at random. StorySlammers will spin tales of 7 minutes or less.

The performance should be told rather than read. Creativity is encouraged, truth is optional.Winners are selected by crowd response so bring all of your loud friends!

This open mike event is FREE and anyone is welcome to participate or listen to the stories. However, story content is often geared toward an adult audience. The evening will continue until everyone has had a chance to tell a story and the winners have been selected.

Among the noted speakers for the 3rd Annual Paracon Conference were well-known Oklahoma celebrity, "Count Gregore", "Dr. Fear", TV's "Haunting Evidence" star Patrick Burns and noted author-publisher, Troy Taylor. Adding to the event was well-known Oklahoma storyteller, Marilyn A. Hudson aka "The Oklahoma Ghost Teller" sharing some true tales of the spooky variety to a packed house at the historic Elks Lodge.

There are two major storytelling festivals planned this year.

June 5-6, the 3rd Annual Oklahoma Storytelling Festival. "The Spirit of Oklahoma Storytelling Festival" will be held on the lovely campus of Seminole State College. Go to the webpage of the Territory Tellers (www.territorytellers.org) and contact the President via email to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

Sept. 11-12, the first newly recast, Oklahoma City Storytelling Festival, will be held in a location yet to be announced. The OKC Arts Council has a volunteer form on their website at http://www.artscouncilokc.com/volunteer-form

In November, at locations around the state, "Tellabration!" an evening of storytelling will be celebrated as well. These events are usually sponsored by the state storytelling organization or one of their guilds, partners, or story groups.

Wintertales has now entered the history books, but a new festival is set to replace it and add delightful stories in the early fall. The new festival, The Oklahoma City Storytelling Festival, will be held Sept. 11 to 12 (place to be announced) and will include multiple tellers and performers, workshops and family matinees. STORYTELLING FOR CREDIT IN OKLAHOMA

Courses for formal college credit are now available , or being added, at several institutions in Oklahoma. All institutions are accredited and financial aid may be available for qualified students.

"Storytelling and the Bible" is a class offered at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa. Barbara McBride-Smith is a well known teller and promoter of storytelling on this campus. This course looks at the use of the Bible in narrative preaching, teaching, and communiation.

"Christian Storytelling" is a new course being added to the curriculum at Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma. Storyteller and educator Marilyn A. Hudson is spearheading this course. The course will introduce basic skills, introduce ways of using storytelling in a variety of settings, and provide stage performance experience through public performance(s).

"Storytelling in the Land of Enchantment" is being offered by OU as a summer course with Tim Tingle, well-known storyteller, as the instructor. The course will explore storytelling in Native Amerian culture and related topics.

Oklahoma ParaCon 2009 Hosted by the “Ghost Divas” and the El Reno Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is set for Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Historical & Haunted Elk’s Lodge No. 743.

El Reno, OK – The 4th annual Oklahoma Paranormal Conference will be held at the historic Elks Lodge in El Reno, Oklahoma on March 21, 2009. This year’s event will feature many speakers from across the nation and Oklahoma.

2009 speakers include nationally recognized ghostologists such as Oklahoma favorites Troy Taylor, author, and TruTV’s “Haunting Evidence” star Patrick Burns who will headline the conference. Other speakers are Oklahoma’s very own skeptic, Dr. Bryan Farha, Paranormal Deep Sea Diver Lee Ehrlich of Florida, Georgia Ghost Society founder Bob Hunnicutt, Oklahoma story-teller Marilyn Hudson, Oklahoma’s only TV horror host Brian “Dr. Fear” Young, and Paranormal Investigation Team of Tulsa and Tulsa’s Spirit Tour coordinators Teri French and Russ White. The event is being emceed by internationally known Brian and Anna Marie of Ghostology! - internet radio powered by CBS.

This year’s theme is “It was a dark and stormy night…Celebrating the ghost story!” Ghost stories have intrigued everyone for centuries, so we invite everyone to explore, share and understand the power of the ghost story. From the psychology behind why we like to be afraid to the ghostly tales of yesterday and today, it will all be discovered in a fun and educational setting.

Ghostlahoma, the only book solely dedicated to Oklahoma ghost stories will be released at the Oklahoma ParaCon. Written by para-historians Tonya Hacker and Tammy Wilson, Ghostlahoma will chill your bones and warm your heart with over 40 true tales of hauntings from the Sooner State. From the first published ghost story in Oklahoma to present day phantom hitchhikers, this book will take you through over 100 years of Oklahoma’s haunted history.

The El Reno Convention and Visitor’s Bureau will be hosting historically themed Upper Floor Tours and dinner events later in the evening in downtown El Reno. There will also be trolley tours that are fundraisers for the Preserve El Reno Program. Dinner will be available for purchase at the main event at the Elk’s Lodge.

Oklahoma ParaCon 2009 will be held at the Historically Haunted Elks Lodge in El Reno, OK on March 21, 2009 beginning at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $25 each for the event if purchased in advance, and $30 at the door. Tours and dinners will be an additional cost. This event is approved for teenagers to seniors, no matter how old, or how skeptical. OK ParaCon is becoming a part of Oklahoma’s history, one story at a time.

MEDIA RELEASE Border Queen Book Festival 2009 Oklahoma’s second Border Queen Book Festival (BQBF) will be held Saturday, March 7, 2009, from 10 - 3 PM in the new Asbury Complex at 410 South 2nd Street in Comanche, OK. The City of Comanche expects statewide attendance with added attractions scheduled for 2009, a Chautauqua being one of them on Friday evening, March 6th. We are expecting 50 authors, publishers and illustrators to be in attendance for BQBF 2009. Food will be available again at the Asbury Complex at noon. Free admission offers opportunity to meet authors and purchase autographed books. To kick off the 2009 festival a Chautauqua type program free of charge to the public on Friday night will co-feature Dr. Steve Kern, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, and his wife, Sally, State Representative of House District 84, at the Asbury Complex from 6:30 – 7:45 PM. Dr. Kern will express his views on the Evolution vs. Creation debate and Sally will speak on Freedom of Expression and Teaching the Controversy in Public Schools, a bill she has authored. Kern’s book, “No Other Gods - The Biblical Creation Worldview,” written from a compilation of lectures given over a twenty year period, supports his program position and will be for sale that evening as well as at the book festival the next day. Information from science, archeology, history, and scripture are presented as evidence for faith based in Creation. Added attractions for the second BQBF include a local essay contest for middle school children sponsored by Southern Oklahoma Arts Council with recognition and prize money to be given to winners; an entertaining and award winning percussion band performance is slated; the highly acclaimed guest speakers will be on Friday night before the book festival Saturday. She wants to go to the schools again and interact with the children by telling them a story about Odd-Leigh, a little fairy with flaming red hair who was ostracized for being different. The story celebrates differences and tells the children it is all right to be different and that people matter no matter what wrapping they are in. The Board of Directors of the state storytelling organization , The Territory Tellers, met recently to make further plans the upcoming 3rd Annual Storytelling Festival in Seminole, Oklahoma. The group of some dozen storytelling experts and arts supporters met on the campus of Southwestern Christian University in Bethany. Their next meeting will be at Seminole State College in Seminole in March. The group meets four times a year in various locations around the state to promote storytelling through events, promoting the formation of story guilds, and in providing training workshops via its talented members.
